The first number in a case citation refers to the volume of the book.
The second notation identifies which book the case is published in.
The third number references which page in the book the case begins on.
For example, Marbury v. Madison is published in Volume 5 of U.S. Reports (A book that publishes U.S. Supreme Court decision), starting on page 137.
Howell v. Hamilton Meats & Provisions, Inc. is published in volume 179 of Cal.App.4th (a book that publishes california court of appeals decision), starting on page 686.
