According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in a given year, approximately 6.6 people are killed between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., and another 6.6 between the hours of 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.  That’s the highest rate for any time of day.  After a long day, people are tired and looking forward to getting home from work.  That’s why its more important than ever to stay vigilant on your commute home.

The Most Dangerous Day of the Week to Drive: Saturday

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Saturday is actually the most dangerous day to drive with an average of  158 traffic related fatalities each Saturday.   Saturday also has the highest number of fatalities compared to the percentage of cars on the road with an average of 1.2 deaths per  100 million drivers.

July 4, Independence Day is usually the most dangerous day to drive according to IIHS.  Lots of travel to celebrate the holiday, combined with people overindulging an alcohol at backyard barbeques can make for a dangerous combination.

Most Dangerous Holiday Weekend to Drive:  Thanksgiving

While the 4th of July is the most dangerous single day, when you average the several day period surrounding the holiday, Thanksgiving is actually the deadliest travel holiday.  This makes sense, since it is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year, with families from all across the country traveling to get back together.  When traveling over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house this year, stay alert and keep Thanksgiving a fun and safe holiday.

Most Dangerous Seasonal Condition to Drive In:  The First Day After a Snow Storm

Snow days can be great for kids when school gets cancelled, but according to a study done at University of California at Berkeley School of Public Health, the first snowy day of the year can be a dangerous day to drive.  In fact, it is significantly more dangerous even compared to other snow days!.  Fatal accidents were 14% more likely on this day.
